Bad news friends, the bubbles going to work. I know, I know it’s going to suck. We did everything possible to block the success of the bubble, but you can’t block the power of mtv, and mtv isn’t going to let Cartel fail. Why won’t MTV let Cartel fail? Because MTV can not have failure associated with it. MTV’s entire business plan surrounds the fact that they determine what and who is cool. If Cartel fails, their credibility fails, and they can not have that.
Sure in the grand scheme of things the bubble may not work out. Cartel has cemented themselves as a future less artist along with all the other reality tv disasters, but this record will sell. And to be honest, the single has a lot of top 40 potential. Not that its a huge hit, but even a mildy catchy single with mtv backing it becomes a success at radio. Its just the reality, top 40 doesn’t know whats cool, they need mtv to tell them what is.
I am listening to the new single right now on the bands Purevolume.com page. I have to say, the song has a lot of mainstream potential. MTV kids will eat this up. The only problem is the singer winks at the camera in the video and, the reality is, winking is way gay. Not a choice move but I guess at the end of the day everyone who’s watching “Next” or “Date My Mom” on MTV probably questions their sexuality anyway, so it works.
The thing about this all is its just kind of a bummer. I don’t want it to be a success because of the impact it will have on music. But in reality its nothing new, mediocre artists have been put in extraordinary situations for years (i.e. Ashley Simpson, Kelly Ozbourne, that one blond chick with the parents) and have sold far more records then they actually should have. At the end of the day it all works itself out, every artist like this never has a career and eventually falls.
I suppose I am just jealous, I play a mean harmonica and with a little PR and a bubble I could be a star too. The public is ready for me and my harmonica. The public is ready.
