I am currently tuned into the MTV Music Awards and I can not tell you a single winner. The reality is there have been a few moon men given out, but I am just so damn distracted by the flashy lights and slightly overweight performing artists. This year the award show features a few shinny prizes and a cluster-fuck of mediocracy. Every artist so far that has performed has sounded completely sub-par. This is not to say that these artists are in fact sub part (with that said, most actually are) but the entire delivery of the award show has created such a madhouse of performances that its becoming completely impossible to actually enjoy the show.
I think the saddest part about the entire event is knowing there are such better artists out there. 2007 is probably the most exciting year for rock and roll since the mid 80’s. Fresh music and innovative ideas have rocked the blogosphere this developing year and I actually feel excited about music for the first time in a while. Thats not to say that I lost interest in music, just kind of grew bored with a lot of artists out there for a while.
It seems after watching more and more that MTV feels like each performing artist is not able to stand on their own. The show is known in the past for popular collaborations and innovative ideas, but now it just seems like insecurity. You have the Justin, 50 and Timberland crew subconsciously battling Kanye West and the Decaydance crew missing notes in their party like performance. Its a cluster of noise, lights and sub-par sounding celebrities; we may as well e watching Perez Hilton humping the leg of TMZ while watching two midgets donkey-punch NME. Its mass consumption of mediocracy shoved into as little time as possible.
I think this sums up how the media giants don’t actually have a grasp on what kids really want. They think they understand, performing countless studies of the teenage demographic, then applying their findings to the highest possible percentage. This is the problem, they are applying the results of studies instead of actually understanding the new generation. Kids want all the music they want, exactly when they want it and how they want it, but they don’t wanted to be raped in the eyes by it.
Perhaps I am wrong, perhaps they really do - but it is my opinion that this show is over the top. Its to much. I really hope for all humanity that the ratings on this show are low, if not we will be seeing cartoons featuring a smurf-ghostbuster-ninja molesting our kids minds.
Or maybe I missed the entire point…
