Have you ever went on a “personals” website and read some of the entries? Its completely fucking insane! Tonight I ventured into the unknown rhelms of “Craigslist Personals”. The other day I met someone at a party who said they had met a friend using CraigsList which weirded me out. This person was completely normal and non-insane looking, so it really shocked me to say the least. I had to investigate further.
I entered the Personals section to begin my case study. Question: What type of person decides CraigsList is the place to meet someone and how do they intend to do so? I started my investigation by clicking on one of the first personals titled “Excuse me Sir, will you take me out to a big girls club? - 22 (Long Beach)”. The profile that followed featured a girl interested in going to a “big girls” club. Apparently she is “cute if you like big girls” and proves it with the following pic:

Now, I didn’t choose to highlight this because she wants to go to a “big girls club”. I can respect that in the sense that, hey - at least 1) shes honest and 2) she knows where she is comfortable, but I just don’t understand how Craigslist became the choice for the place to meet someone for her! And if she wanted to meet someone, why would you merely take a picture of your foot and post it online?
My second venture seemed a bit more promising. “Calling all Rockstars!!! - 33″ from Hollywood grabbed my attention. Hey, I like music, she likes music - I mean c’mon right!? Heres our friends post:
“Looking for model type guys, A-list type. You know blonde hair, green eyes, ska8er, DC kinda guy.
Beaches
BBQ
Monday night Football
Hottest clubs in LA
Comedy clubs
Just to name a few’ Send me your myspace link and i’ll send u mine, or just simply attach a pic. (asl)
Ty”
Again, baffled. Model types? ska8er (with the 8)? A-list? Do these people typically frequent the Craigslist world looking for others? Is this the reason these beautiful people are secretly always together? I can not come to understand the concept behind this, Craigslist is not the target market to find model types… Unless they are thinking model homes or model airplanes.
I don’t really hold it against these people that they felt the need to post on the internet to find someone. I get it, they are lonely and LA is hard, but what I don’t get is why people find the need to post things that are completely unattractive. Not saying they should lie, but there is a level of “marketing” that seems completely necessary to go into these things.
To be honest at this point I am so baffled that I don’t know where I am going with this, so I will name this part 1 of a series of investigations. I am completely baffled at this point by this online sub-culture I have not investigated in the past. I will continue my research and post my findings!
