Anyone here sports fans? I would imagine some of you are and those who are not can all mutually agree that they are, in fact, not Barry Bonds fans. Thats why this story pertains to all of us. Barry Bonds record breaking ball will be sent to the Baseball Hall Of Fame with an asterisk, ending the month long drama of “what to do with the ball”.
Many of you probably heard on tv and/or from your drunk baseball loving boyfriends that fashion designer Mark Ecko recently purchased the ball for around 700,000 dollars. He then set up voting online where fans could decide wither to send the ball to the hall of fame untouched, asterisk the ball then send it to the hall of fame or blast it into outer space. The votes are in and fans have decided to send it to the hall of fame asterisked.
I find this interesting, because this is a public acknowledgment of peoples feelings towards the current state of baseball. This morning I spent some time watching Sports Center while eating my cereal and noticed a similarity between all the baseball highlights; all the stands were empty. Attendance to baseball seems to be at an all time low, which is even more crazy seeing how we are preparing for playoff season. People just don’t care anymore, I know I sure don’t.
Baseball needs to clean up its act, if it doesn’t change something soon, it will quickly become about as popular as soccer. If it wasn’t for its tv airtime and successful playoff series, I would suggest its well on its way. No one cares, and why should we? Theres way to many games in a sport thats slow enough as it is with to many cheaters and a lack of authenticity. In a game thats popular because of its deep history and impact on American culture, destroying the game with steroid use and increased games is the worst idea. No longer is it the legendary game of the past, but a boring-drama filled game of the future.
No one cares about people breaking records or hitting home runs anymore, it doesn’t matter. We want to see real athletes playing in high level competition naturally becoming the best at what they do. Every time theres a Barry Bonds breaking the record it makes everyone watching feel like “man, if i took steriods I could probably do that too”. Even though this is drastically not the case, I do think its a mutual feeling among sports fans. Stop cheating, stop being an idiot, and lets go back to playing the game that America loved.
