Soulful music has been recently popularize by the ever dramatic and popalicious Amy Winehouse, but the style has been around far longer than Amy has had breath in her longs. Bettye LaVette is one such artist who has been doing this for years and her authenticity shines in her beautiful music. At 61 years young, Bettye is still at the top of her game, creating a record that is filled with honesty and life lessons learned over the years.
Bettye recently released a new record on ANTI Records titled “The Scene Of the Crime”, which I would have to say is one of my favorite records of the year (although not in my top 10, she is only of my new appreciations I have learned of in the past few months).
Enjoy Bettye at the links below, and make sure to check out her new record.

You got Bettye LaVette’s age wrong, she’s only 61. Don’t rush her!
Amy Winehouse — “Soulful?”

Oops! Fixed her age, thanks for pointing that out.
As far as Amy Winehouse, I don’t think she is soulful when you break her lyrics and point of view down, but the genre of music she has popularized stems from soul routs where Bettye excels. Bettye is the “legit” version of what Amy is trying to be.
