So who thinks that television is going to stink in the next coming months due to the writers strike? In my opinion - Yes. But honestly - what I really care about is the impact it’s going to have on the online world and the potential increase in views of user generated content on the web. Television already has had to share it’s piece of the media pie with high traffic sites like the You Tubes’s and TMZ.Com’s of the world. Not only share it’s audience with the online realm, but has been forced to adapt to this new medium by creating platforms to house all their shows online to appease the new “on demand - i want to watch, when i want to watch it” generation.
My forecast - We’re about to see an increase in user generated content on the production side, as well as in viewer ship due to the repeat episodes we’re soon to see much of. (Which may be a “duh” to a lot of you) BUT - I have a good hunch that in the interim of the television hiatus - people will exponentially embrace user generated material and reality television (yes middle america too) and when the Writer’s strike is over and it’s time for new episodes of our favorite shows to start airing again, the increase in traffic on online portals will stay up, if not increase.
I’d love to see the neilson ratings before and after the strike. I predict - ratings will dip and these new numbers will become the standard in the future. Very similar to how major record labels now jump for joy if a record sells 100,000k , in comparison to a couple years ago when platinum records were a norm.
