The Evolution of the word “Social”

February 10th, 2008 · No Comments

“Social” has become the hot word within the last 3 years. All due to beloved social networks that have emerged on the internet. Several have sprouted quickly like stubborn weeds – not wanting to let leave the web 2.0 scene even though they really serve the same purpose as the other 56 networks out there. As you can tell, my tone in regards to social networking is nothing but flattering (ps. this is just personally - professionally I work in the digital space, so I can’t shit on it that much) . Yes - they provide people of all ages loads of enjoyment – mindless plugging away, adding friends, finding old friends, and exploring new content. Yes - for adults they help them find the loves of their lives and filter through all the bullshit dates they could have had with incompatible people.
But aside from all the good – there’s one very important element that social networking has molded away, and stripped us from. ACTUALLY BEING SOCIAL. The truth of the matter is we praise the internet for giving us the ability to extend our social capabilities and friends through a monitor – but when does EXTENDING end up becoming REPLACING good ole social skills.

Whatever happen to board games - connect four - battle ship - trouble - boggle - when 2 players or more on the side of the box meant that you’d be having fun socializing with your buddy at recess. On that note - time to stop blogging tonight.
